These Times Are Not Mine is a materials exploration that seeks primarily to encompass and encroach upon an entire space – a mixed media installation. Aesthetically, my goals are to transcend the boundaries of both collage and oil painting to create a hybrid while incorporating found objects that are in conversation with the space itself. By introducing unexpected juxtapositions of color, scale, shape, image, texture, etc. I hope to create new meanings, expectations, senses of place, and understandings. As it is a process based project, it should reflect growth and sprawl, while maintaining a sense of order and design. Conceptually, my project deals with growth and change, notions of comfort, senses of place, attachment to place (imagined or experienced, memories of either), and rituals. Much of the concept is tied to existentialism (nothing has inherent meaning and so we are forced to create our own), and the project will serve as documentation of the attempt to create larger meaning from small pieces. The final installation will provide the viewer with a sensual, overwhelming experience meant to “transport,” guided by both visual and aural cues.
